"The Queen's Gambit"

The Queen’s Gambit” is the Netflix’s new production, which premiered on 23rd October. It shows the history of Elizabeth (Beth) Harmon, a brilliant chess player. She is an orphan who had lost her mother in a car accident and ended up in a Christian orphanage due to her mother's tragic end. Our protagonist meets a janitor there, the man who teaches her the most difficult game in the world-chess. He discovers pretty quickly that this little girl (she is about nine or ten years old) is really gifted and could beat even male chess player. It's unusual, because the series takes place in the 1950s and 1960s, and chess was a man's game back then. She was the only woman in that close man's world and she definitely stood out. Not only by her sex, but also by her red hair, her mesmerizing eyes and later by her amazing outfits (I want some of her clothes).

I love this series because of its strong female character, who is not afraid of doing what she loves, even though the whole world is against her. She is compiting with the best male players in the world without feeling any fear. She shows that our sex can't define us. I also adore that the creators are not defining maine character by her relationships with men. She is a strong woman who doesn't need a man by her side, a man telling her what to do. During the series she's struggling with some addiction to the medication and later to alcohol, but she managed to get back on track and make her dreams come true.

I think that this series is very good and deserves being watched. It has only seven one-hour long episodes, so it doesn't take much time. You can really feel the climate of those times (amazing costumes and decorations help you truly immerse) and get into this history. Anya Taylor-Joy, who portrays Beth Harmon is outstanding in her role. We can also see a Polish accent-Marcin Dorociński portrays Vasily Borgov, the Russian world champion chess player and the biggest opponent for Beth.

To be honest, I hate chess, but after watching "The Queen's Gambit" I want to find my old chess board and start to play.
