“Überweihnachten”
“Überweihnachten” debuted on Netflix on November 27th, but I needed almost three weeks to watch it. It is a German miniseries and I think that the language was the reason to delay the watching. I used to learn German in primary school and I didn’t like it. The pronunciation is really odd and discouraging. Despite of all this, I decided to give it a chance. This miniseries is interesting in a certain way, but has some weak moments. However, I could learn a little about Christmas in Germany (I didn’t know that they eat goose on Christmas Day). It’s not a typical Christmas story, but can show us that nothing is more important than a family, especially at Christmas time.
Bastian, unfulfilled musician, works in call center in Berlin and he is returning to his hometown for Christmas. It will be a first Christmas without his girlfriend who dumped him almost a year ago. He still is not over her and can’t pull it together. He has also difficult relations with his parents and brother, but is very excited about Christmas. Unfortunately, the fate can be tricky-it turns out that his brother is dating his ex-girlfriend and both of them are coming for Christmas. It causes a tension between brothers and upsets his mother who tries to organize a happy Christmas. Bastian and Niklas need to go for a Christmas tree, but the best ones are already sold, so they decide to cut a tree which belongs to the church. They make up for a brief moment, but the presence of Fine doesn’t help. The same night Bastian meets Karina, his brother's first girlfriend. They get along pretty well, they really understand each other. For a minute it looks like a revenge on his brother, but soon we realize that they have feelings for each other. We can also see a life in small town, where everybody knows everybody and seems like everyone has a secret. His parents definitely have a secret: his father has a cancer and this could be his last Christmas. After knowing that Bastian tries to make a happy Christmas, but it doesn’t work out. Turns out that his mother forgot to order a goose, so they have to improvise and prepare something else. The tension in the house is really tense and brothers are fighting all the time, even during the Christmas concert. Bastian tells everyone’s secrets in front of almost whole town and destroys Katrina’s stand with ginger biscuits. After a conversation with his grandmother Bastian tries to make amends with everyone: he apologizes to everyone, gives back the Christmas tree and organizes a Christmas concert, where he sings his original song. It reunites his family and the whole town.
