"Fate: The Winx Saga"

“Fate: The Winx Saga” is the latest production on Netflix, which debuted on platform two days ago and already managed to get to TOP10 on Polish Netflix. It isn’t surprise for me, because I watched the animated version when I was a child and it was very popular. I think that my peers and people close to my age are watching this just to get back to their childhood, even it is just for a while. When Netflix announced this series, I was overjoyed, but when I watched trailers my enthusiasm weakened. However, I waited impatiently for the premiere. I wanted to compare my childhood memories with this new version. Sadly, Netflix’s series looks unfavourably in comparison to animated version, it is more a drama about teenagers and not a series about fairies. The creators changed the plot and they skipped certain characters. It is not a complete disaster, but I expected a lot more.

The series tells a story of Bloom, a 16-years-old girl, who arrives in Alfea, a school for fairies in Otherworld. She recently discovered her powers and she spent her whole life in the First World (our Earth, she lived in California). Ms. Farah Dowling, the Headmistress of Alfea found her and invited to Alfea. Bloom wants to learn how to control her power of fire, because she caused a fire in which her mother suffered severe burns. Bloom was angry at her and emotions took over her. Ms. Dowling told Bloom that her powers come from some fairy ancestor and her magical heritage was dormant. Soon it turns out that Bloom has a great power and natural talent, so the story about fairy ancestor seems to be not true. Although she has problems with her emotion, with causes troubles with her magic, she’s doing her best. Aisha, a water fairy and Bloom’s roommate discovers that Bloom is changeling, a fairys child who had been left in place of a human child stolen by the fairies, so Bloom’s parents are not her parents. Soon she realises that Ms. Dowling knew about her past, but she kept this in secret. She has no idea who left Bloom in the First World, but has a suspicion. Bloom makes friends with her roommates and with Sky, a very talented Specialist. He is son of a war hero who died when he was a child. He trains to be as good as his father, because everyone expects that. Sky dated Stella, one of the Bloom’s roommates and a princess of Solaria, one of the biggest land in Otherworld. The Headmistress and the other teachers are dealing with the Burned Onesa humanoid form which looks like human skeleton. The Specialist are training to learn how to kill these creatures. They were a scourge of the previous generation and Ms. Dowling, Sky’s father and two teachers were fighting against them. For 16 years there was no sign of them, but they came back in the same moment as Bloom. In the last episode we find out that they were humans fighting in an ancient war. A magic known as the Dragon Flame was used against them and turned them into the Burned Ones. They are searching for Bloom, because she has the Dragon Flame inside her. When the Burned Ones threaten the lives of Alfea’s students, Bloom reaches the power inside her and kills them. In the moment of death, the Burned Ones regain their human form. In the last episode we find out that it was planned by Rosalind, former Headmistress of Alfea and Ms. Dowling mentor. She kills Ms. Dowling and takes over the school, but also reveals that Sky’s father is alive. This opens a way for second season and I’m pretty sure that there will be a continuation.

I definitely expected more of this series and I’m quite disappointed. They changed a series about fairies into a drama for teenagers. The students use mobile phones, have Instagram, are smoking and drinking alcohol. The creators changed the plot and I don’t mind that boys are fairies, but the Specialist should have their own school and WINX should have wings (at least they explain why fairies don’t have them). There are also things in the plot which remain unsolved, so it is quite frustrating. WINX is one of the worst Netflix series I have seen recently, but has a potential to get better. I’ll definitely watch season 2 (if there will be season 2), because in spite of all shortcomings I want to know the rest of the story.
