"Spinning out"

“Spinning out” debuted on Netflix on January 1st last year and I couldn’t wait to watch it. I thought it would be a perfect entry into new year and I wasn’t completely wrong. I love figure skating and I watch the competition whenever I can, so I know the topic well. I don’t call myself an expert, but I know all the rules and some of the competitors. “Spinning out” is very realistic in presenting the competition and all the trainings. I could only criticise one thing: in every film or series about figure skating, skaters train on almost empty ice rink and this is not true. This series is quite good, although like almost each one of this kind is quite predictable. We all know how it will end, but this doesn’t take all the joy from watching this series.

The series tells a story of Kat Baker who is a very talented and titled figure skater. She won many prizes and trophies, but one fall changes her life. She falls during her triple jump on the competition and hits her head. After this she is not able to do triple jumps, so basically means she can’t compete. In every long program there must be at least one triple jump and Kat is considering quitting figure skating. Her younger sister begins to skate very well and has no trouble with jump alle the jumps, what obviously doesn’t help Kat. As if that wasn’t enough, their mother suffers from bipolar disorder and later we found out that Kat is also suffering. The ice rink belongs to the Davies family, one of the richest family in town. Justin, the eldest son, also skates, but in pairs. During one training his partner has an accident and she quits. Justin needs to find a new one and his coach, Dasha thinks that Kat will be the right partner for him. She doesn’t know that this two spent a night together over a year ago and there is a tension between them. At the beginning Kat refuses, but after a huge fight with her mother she decides to take Dasha’s offer, but it is too late, Justin has already a new partner. She is really tough person and Justin doesn’t like her, but their parents made an agreement. Kate tries to impress Justin in order to skate with him. She fails, but she manages to find a solution: she needs to impress Justin’s father and with a little help from Justin’s stepmother she manages to skate with Justin. Now she needs to learn how to skate in pair and how to make a connection with Justin. Especially when they are going to skate their long program to music from “Romeo and Juliet” and a tango for a short one. They need to became one, to predict the others thoughts and movements. They have some problems with that, but eventually they manage to cooperate and skate together. It’s obvious that Justin has feelings for Kat, but he’s hiding it. Kat does all the movements right, the only thing missing is the jump. She is afraid, but thanks to Dasha she’s overcoming her fears. To keep skating she stops to take her pills and starts to act strangely. During the competition Kat decides to add more difficult figures in order to take a chance to get to sectionals. They manage to do that and they spent a night together. They are a couple which may be dangerous for them, because if they break up, they may not be able to skate together. They take the risk and it seems like everything starts to work out, but Kat has a maniac episode caused by not taking her pills. Justin finds out about her illness and wonders if what he had with Kat was real. She said that she loved him, but now she isn’t sure and he truly loves her. They are not skating any more, but Justin decides to perform at sectionals and they manage to take first place after short program, but Justin doesn’t want to be with Kat. On the training before long program Kat almost falls during the lift, but Justin doesn’t make her fall. In that moment Kat recalls that he made that promise at the beginning and at that moment she fell in love with him. They make up and confess their love. At the end of the last episode, we can see them taking the ice and start their program, but we can’t see the end. They probably win the competition and eventually go for the Olympics, but we’ll never know, because Netflix cancelled this series.

In the series we can also see stories of other’s skaters and characters, but Kat and Justin’s story are the most important. We can see a lot of drama and pain, but this is how professional skaters live. There is a lot of pain, cuts and wounds. I adore the opening credits, because we can see real people skating. I really regret that Netflix cancelled this series. I want to know more about the characters, I want to see Justin and Kat winning. I also want to know if Justin’s little stepsister will survive. Maybe one day Netflix bring back this series.
